Virtue-Based Leadership is a leadership style and mindset focused on balancing ethical principles, company and personal leadership virtues while leading in a people-centered organization. It guides leaders in making decisions and acting in ways that inspire others to adopt the same mindset.
By following this approach, leaders can create a strong connection between their own individual virtues and the overall virtues of the company.
DEFINITION OF A VIRTUE
Virtues are positive traits or qualities that guide how we act and make decisions. Unlike values, which are more static beliefs about what’s important, virtues focus on turning those beliefs into action, consistently striving to do good and create a positive impact.
So, using virtues over values is focusing on being a good person rather than just believing in certain things. It's about living out positive qualities rather than just talking about them. By shaping our daily behavior, virtues help us achieve better results and reflect the kind of person we aim to be.
The purpose of this module is for the Regional Manager to act with awareness and consciousness while having a high level of autonomy and integrity when leading people.
By constantly reflecting about the company virtues and how they are positively combined with personal beliefs, the RM will master the skill of leading with integrity and self respect when making decisions.
Virtue-Based Leadership will help a RM create a strong culture, fostering collaboration and teamwork in all stores. All Juicers will be inspired to go above and beyond to meet the organization’s goals. When implementing a common set of virtues for all employees to understand and follow, it improves the engagement, productivity and the willingness to work together in alignment.
With a shared focus on virtues, the team aligns around a common goal, increasing collaboration and the chances of succeeding together.
To lead according to Company Virtue, a leader must consider different angles. This ensures that every decision they make matches the important aspects of the company's virtues.
Initially, the leader must ensure that their actions are lawful. Then, they should reflect on the company's overall manifest and virtues, while making sure their decisions align with company strategy and mission. It's crucial for the leader to remember their own virtues and stay authentic. Finally, they must use their competences appropriately to complete the task at hand.
To lead with a virtue-based mindset, a leader must balance legal requirements, align with the company’s strategy, vision, and mission, and stay true to their own leadership virtues. By doing so, they can use their skills effectively to inspire and guide others.
An employee will not believe in a set of virtues until they have been exposed to them repeatedly. In order for them to stick, the virtues should be reinforced at every chance given by the Leader. Making a link between virtues and practical scenarios will convince the Employees that the virtues mean more than “just” words.
The Company Virtues must be integrated into every employee-related decision such as: Recruitment, on-boarding, performance management, rewards, promotions and even disciplinary procedures.
When Employees live up to the desired behaviour, a Leader must continuously demonstrate Virtue Based Leadership towards the Employees for them to keep momentum. This will motivate the Employee to continue living by Company Virtues.
It is essential for the Manager to uphold a high standard of Virtue-Based Leadership to stay on the healthy chain of virtue-based leadership behaviour and hereby keep momentum. If the Manager fails to demonstrate and embody this leadership style, the momentum will weaken over time, leading to misaligned and undesired behaviors within the team.
In order for the RM to succeed in the role it’s important to differ between leadership and management. Both aspects of Leadership & Management are important in order, for all employees, to perform every day.
Management mindset has focus on the work tasks with a get things done attitude. Focus on structures, materialistic things and appealing to the logic and the brain.
Leadership mindset has focus on the people and their feelings. Encourages and supports people towards a directions whilst appealing to the emotions and the heart.
It is called ‘Paradox Leadership’ as the RM needs to master both aspects to have real influence. This means that the RM should be neither a leader or a manager, but should be both in order to reach a commercial mindset.
Commercial mindset is the ability to create operational excellence by leading and developing people in alignment with our company virtues.
The RM should understand how each way of leading will lead to different decisions.
Authentic leadership through behavioural skills:
When leading people in alignment with company virtues, it’s important to master two key personal leadership traits: empathy and humbleness. These are just two examples of virtues that help the Manager demonstrate authentic leadership.
Empathy:
Means the Manager is able to understand and connect with the feelings of others. Great leaders recognize the importance of showing compassion and a willingness to support their team.
Humbleness:
Means the Manager sees themselves as no different from the people they lead. Great leaders understand that every employee holds equal value to the company.
Employees will respect and follow their Manager if the balance between leadership and management is mastered. When the Manager also embodies empathy and humbleness, they will gain deeper respect and trust from their team.
